There is no reliable answer to how long vinegar takes to kill mold, because the research does not establish one. Household vinegar (about 4% to 6% acetic acid) has shown some antifungal activity against certain molds in lab tests but not others. It is not an EPA-registered mold killer. Also, the goal isn't just to kill mold. The [EPA notes](https://www.epa.gov/mold/brief-guide-mold-moisture-and-your-home) that dead mold can still cause allergic reactions, so it has to be removed. On a small patch on a hard, non-porous surface, vinegar can help you clean. The job is done when growth is scrubbed off, the surface is dry, the moisture source is fixed, and mold doesn't come back.
Popular claims that vinegar kills a precise percentage of mold species, or kills mold in a set number of minutes, are not backed by published studies we could verify. The Short Answer
- Kill time: Unknown. No published study we found gives a validated contact time for household vinegar against the range of molds found in homes.
- Evidence: Limited and mixed. In one lab study, vinegar slowed one common mold (Penicillium chrysogenum) but had no effect on another (Aspergillus fumigatus).
- What matters more: Physically removing the growth, drying the material completely, and fixing the moisture that let mold grow.
- Where vinegar is reasonable: Small spots of surface mold or mildew on sealed, hard surfaces such as glazed tile, glass, porcelain, or a shower surround.
- Where it isn't: Moldy drywall, carpet, ceiling tiles, insulation, soft or unsealed wood, HVAC systems, and any area larger than about 10 square feet.
- Real test of success: The area stays clean and dry for several weeks, with no returning spots or musty odor.
What the Research Actually Shows
The best-known study is Rogawansamy et al. (2015), published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health. Researchers tested five agents against two common indoor molds: tea tree oil, vinegar (4.0% to 4.2% acetic acid), 70% ethanol, and two commercial disinfectants.
Vinegar inhibited Penicillium chrysogenum but had no inhibitory effect on Aspergillus fumigatus. The authors concluded that vinegar "may not be effective against the diverse fungal genera found in the indoor air environment."
That study has important limits for homeowners:
- It was done on lab agar plates, not drywall, wood, grout, or carpet.
- It measured whether growth was inhibited around a treated disc. It did not measure how many minutes it took to kill mold on a real surface.
- It tested only two species. It did not compare vinegar with bleach or plain detergent.
A 2019 evidence review prepared for New Zealand's Ministry of Health by the Institute of Environmental Science and Research (ESR) found that "the scientific evidence base from which to formulate advice on mould remediation is very limited." It also found that official advice is inconsistent. Some agencies it surveyed recommended vinegar. Another, New Zealand's energy efficiency agency, advised against it and warned that leftover residue "may encourage more mould growth in the future."
The review also summarized building-material studies that did not test vinegar, and they are sobering. In one, none of 10 remediation treatments on gypsum wallboard and pinewood completely destroyed viable fungi, and growth increased rapidly once the materials got wet again. The takeaway is less about any one product and more about moisture: mold on porous material that gets wet again tends to come back, whatever you sprayed on it.
Why "Killing" Mold Isn't the Real Goal
The EPA is direct about this. According to its mold course, "Dead mold is allergenic and may cause allergic reactions and other health effects in some individuals," so "it is not enough to simply kill the mold. It must also be removed." The agency also says using a biocide, including chlorine bleach, "is not recommended as a routine practice during mold cleanup."
That changes the question. Instead of "how long until it's dead," ask:
- Is the growth physically gone? Scrub it off. Don't just spray and walk away.

- Is the water source fixed? Look for a leak, condensation, poor bathroom ventilation, or high humidity. Without a fix, mold will return.
For hard surfaces, the EPA's cleanup advice is simple: "Scrub mold off hard surfaces with detergent and water, and dry completely." Vinegar is not required. Soapy water, scrubbing, and thorough drying do the core work.
Where Vinegar Can Work and Where It Won't
Reasonable uses: Light surface mold or mildew on non-porous, acid-tolerant surfaces. Examples include glazed ceramic tile, glass shower doors, porcelain, many plastics, and sealed surfaces around sinks and tubs. In these spots, mold sits on top of the material and can be wiped away. Poor or risky uses:
- Drywall, ceiling tiles, and insulation. Mold can grow into the paper facing and the material itself. The EPA says absorbent or porous materials "may have to be thrown away if they become moldy." Spraying the surface doesn't remove growth inside it, and soaking drywall adds moisture.
- Carpet, padding, and upholstery. You can't scrub out growth deep in fibers and backing. Moldy carpet and padding often need to be thrown away.
- Unsealed wood, subfloors, and framing. Surface cleaning may lighten stains, but damaged or deeply colonized wood is a job for a professional.
- Natural stone (marble, limestone, travertine) and unsealed grout. Vinegar is acidic and can etch or wear these surfaces. Test an inconspicuous area first or choose a pH-neutral cleaner.
- HVAC ducts and equipment. The EPA warns not to run a system you suspect is contaminated because it can spread mold through the building. This is not a spray-bottle job.
- Large areas. Anything beyond about 10 square feet is outside what the EPA considers a typical DIY cleanup.
Strength: Vinegar sold for food in the U.S. is generally about 4% to 5% acetic acid. The FDA's guidance says diluted vinegar should not fall below 4%. Products sold for cleaning are often a bit stronger. Heinz's multi-purpose "extra strength" vinegar, for example, is labeled 6% acidity. No study we found shows that 6% vinegar is meaningfully better against indoor mold than 5%. Stronger acid is also more likely to damage stone, grout, and some finishes.
Safe Use and What Never To Mix
Even a small cleanup stirs up spores. The CDC recommends at least a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator, non-latex gloves, and goggles that provide complete eye protection. Open windows or doors to ventilate.
People with asthma, allergies, lung disease, COPD, or a weakened immune system should not do mold cleanup. Keep them and children out of the room while you work.
Never mix vinegar with bleach. Bleach mixed with an acid releases chlorine gas. A New Jersey Department of Health hazard alert warns that even low levels can irritate the eyes, nose, and throat and cause coughing and breathing problems. Higher levels can cause lung damage, and very high levels can be fatal. This also applies to back-to-back use: rinse and dry a surface completely before switching products, and never pour one product into a bottle that held another.
The same alert warns that hydrogen peroxide and vinegar together form peracetic acid, which can irritate the eyes, skin, and lungs. Don't combine them in one bottle.

How To Tell if It Worked
There is no instant sign that mold is dead. Discoloration fading doesn't prove it, and lingering stains don't prove mold is alive. Judge the job by these outcomes:
- Visible growth is gone after scrubbing, not just lighter in color.
- The surface and the material behind it stay dry. Running a fan or dehumidifier after cleaning helps.
- No musty odor lingers once the area has aired out.
- Nothing returns when you check again over the next few weeks, especially after showers, humid weather, or rain.
If spots come back in the same place, the cleaning product is not the problem. Moisture is still getting in, or mold is growing inside the material or behind it. Repeating vinegar treatments on returning growth delays the real fix.
Vinegar vs. Bleach, Detergent, Borax, and Hydrogen Peroxide
No household product has strong evidence showing it reliably kills and neutralizes every indoor mold on every material. The ESR review found some evidence that bleach plus detergent may be more effective than other agents, but results were inconsistent. With that caution in mind:
- Detergent and water. This is the EPA's default for hard surfaces. It removes growth and is less likely to damage surfaces or create harmful fumes. For most small cleanups, start here.
- Bleach. The CDC says it can be used at no more than 1 cup of bleach per gallon of water, with ventilation. It is never to be mixed with ammonia or other cleaners. - Hydrogen peroxide. Evidence for plain 3% drugstore peroxide on household mold is limited, and none of the reviews cited here establish it as a better choice. It can lighten some surfaces and fabrics, so test first, and never mix it with vinegar.
- Commercial mold and mildew products. Under federal pesticide law, a product claiming to kill or control mold generally must be EPA-registered. A product that only claims to "clean or remove stains from" mold or mildew does not, according to EPA's FIFRA guidance. If you want a product tested for killing mold, look for an EPA registration number and follow the label.
When To Stop DIY and Call a Professional
Put the spray bottle down and get qualified help when:
- The moldy area is larger than about 10 square feet. The EPA says a smaller area is usually a DIY job; above that, consult its remediation guidance or a professional.
- Mold is in or behind drywall, under flooring, in insulation, or in the HVAC system.
- The moisture came from sewage or contaminated floodwater. The EPA recommends a professional experienced with contaminated-water damage.
- Growth keeps returning after cleaning and drying, or you can't find the moisture source.
- Someone in the home has asthma, allergies, lung disease, or a weakened immune system.
- You rent. Report the mold and the moisture problem to your landlord in writing.

Does vinegar kill black mold?
"Black mold" describes color, not a single species, and you can't identify mold by looking at it. Lab evidence shows vinegar's effect varies by species, and no study we found shows reliable results against the range of dark molds in homes. Treat any mold the same way: remove small patches on hard surfaces, and get professional help for large, porous, or recurring growth.
Should I leave vinegar on mold overnight?
No study shows that an overnight soak kills more mold on household surfaces. Leaving any liquid on porous material adds moisture, and long contact increases the risk of damaging stone, grout, or finishes. On hard surfaces, the scrubbing and drying afterward matter more than how long the vinegar sat.
Is vinegar better than bleach for mold?

Does vinegar prevent mold from coming back?
